Colonial bred sires are making their presence felt when they are given reasonable stud chances….

Ohoka Punter, the dual Derby champion, four-time Group 1 winner and million dollar earner, who is standing at Egmont Park stud, is the leading sire in Queensland for two-year-olds and three-year-olds in the closing season.

Actually, Ohoka Punter has made a somewhat spectacular start as a sire. In his first season he left 36 foals, and of these he has had 27 to the races, and 22 have emerged successful.

Of 14 two-year-old starters this season, nine have been winners and one was placed.

All told, Ohoka Punter left 65 foals from his first two crops and 41 have races and 31 are winners – and amazing 75 percent strike rate.

From his first crop he sired a top colt in Ellis Street (1:52.3), who has won 12 races and $154,687 and was one of the star three-year-olds of this season, and a smart filly in Firebolt (1:55.3), whose four successes include the $32,000 QBred For Life 2YO Final.

The Albion Park winners Gem Punter Pete (1:53.6), Studleigh Punter (1:53.5), Ruby Rules (1:54.7), Studleigh Anne (1:54.9), Missed Consequences, Rockon Rocky, Isla And Addie, Sheez Got Torque, Punter’s Jewel and the NSW provincial winners Shez A Punter, Lucky Punt and Ohoka Dream have been other winners by Ohoka Punter from his initial crops.

On the score of blood Ohoka Punter lacks nothing. His sire Bettor’s Delight (1:49.8) was a champion with stake earnings of $2.5 million, and has been the leading sire in New Zealand and Australia for over a decade. He figures as the sire of two of Australasia’s greatest pacers in Lazarus ($4.1 million) and Leap To Fame ($3.2 million).

Ohoka Punter belongs to a noted female line. His dam Millwood Minisota, being by Christian Cullen, champion sire and broodmare sire from Millwood Annie, by Falcon Seelster from Chrisarma, and tracing to the NZ Oaks winner and noted matron Ar Miss. This is the family which produced the NZ Cup winner Armalight, the Miracle Mile winner Spankem (1:47.7), Excel Stride (NSW Derby) and the Hunter Cup winner Honolua Bay.

It is one of the strongest families in the NZ stud book, having produced top racemares and outstanding colts.

At a service fee of a modest $2,750, Ohoka Punter represents great value for even the most discerning breeder.
