CONNECTIONS of consistent pacer Springfield Affair hope he can break his recent trend this weekend.

Following the country cups circuit this campaign, Springfield Affair has finished among the placegetters during his last three feature appearances.

Those outings include seconds in the Kapunda and Strathalbyn Cups at his last two starts.

Engaged in Saturday night's Port Pirie Cup - the last of the circuit - Springfield Affair is ready to break through for a well-deserved victory according to trainer Kevin Von Duve.

"Hopefully he can break that trend and take home the win," Von Duve said. "He's certainly going well enough to do just that and has paid his dues in the past few cups.

"He did get a win in Gawler between those cups, but it would be great to take home one of the main races."

To be driven by Gaita Pullicino, Springfield Affair has drawn to use his gate speed from barrier two.

The son of Shadow Play led from the same draw in the Strathalbyn Cup.

"I think he should lead from there, but I don't make too many plans," Von Duve said. "I'll leave that to Gaita.

"He does like to roll along in front, but he also showed he can come from behind when he came from near last in Kapunda."

Citing defending champion Lord Zarias as the one to beat, Von Duve described the $25,000 event as a "wide open affair".

"Lord Zarias is the main danger, but there is not much between them as you can see from all the other cups," Von Duve said. "Each Cup has had a different winner, so it comes down to which one gets the right run.

"With a bit of luck, it is our turn."
