Five-year-old mare Ultimate Destiny covered her purchase price for her new connections when the former New South Wales mare won the $9,700 Ladbrokes Racing Club Pace (2180m) in Burnie on Friday night.
The daughter of Caribbean Blaster has been placed in two of her 24 starts in New South Wales before being advertised online and joining the Craig Hayes stable.
Driver Gareth Rattray took the $2.20 favourite straight to the early lead after a slick lead time of 44.01s. The mare was inclined to over-race during the first half of the last mile, which was run in 61.47s, before proving too good for Victorian import Mikiyoursofine ($17) by 1.7m, with Major Ideal ($23) a further 3.5m away third in a 61.99s last half-mile.
The mile rate was 2:03.6s, the quickest on the seven-race card.
“I couldn’t believe it watching as she never pulls ever at home.
“She has had a few little setbacks which were against her. She has done a good job to win, actually, as she also kicked the wheels on Gareth (Rattray),” said Hayes post-race.
“We needed a horse to work with the two-year-olds and yearlings with at home, and she is really good at home. She drops the bit and travels around well at home.
“We will just race her here at Burnie, and she should hopefully keep paying her way,” the trainer explained.
Wayne Yole dominated the meeting with four winners: Queen Of Dance ($12), Kenya ($3.20), Dazzle Me ($16) and Velocity Stride ($9.50).
Other winners included Sweet As Lou ($3.20 out to $3.70), who defied a betting drift in race one, while Sweet Amour ($3.30 into $2.25) had market support to win in the second event.
Racing returns to Burnie on 25 October.
