Astute trainer-driver Paul Cavallaro is guardedly excited about the future of Buzz Bomb, a strong winner at Globe Derby Park on Saturday.
Contesting heat one of the Emerging Stars Pacers Series (1800m), Buzz Bomb ($3.60) finished powerfully to score a three-metre win from Ceeubetty ($3.70) with Fly The Banner ($5.50), 6-1/2 metres away third.
Coming from gate two on the second row, Cavallaro settled the three-year-old three-back in the running line before asking him to sprint to victory.
Cavallaro, who knows what it is like to have a smart horse in his stable through the likes of Artillery and Culture King, believes Buzz Bomb is still a while away from reaching his peak.
“He has grown but is still yet to fill out his frame,” Cavallaro said.
“I believe he is doing everything on raw talent at the moment.
“Tonight is just his third run this preparation and I might give him just another two before sending back to the paddock to build up.
“I would like to go to Mildura to attempt to pick up his Vicbred bonus before coming back to Globe Derby for the Emerging Stars final.”
The $14,999 Emerging Stars Pacers Series Final (1800m) will be held at Globe Derby Park on Saturday, June 29.
Cavallaro said another break should suit the colt with the Southern Cross Series as his goal at the end of the year.
He selected Buzz Bomb as a yearling and purchased him for $22,000 and he looks certain to more than repay that price.
Buzz Bomb is a full brother to Southern Cross Two-Year-Old colts and geldings victor Art Jester which was trained in Mount Gambier by Alyce Finnis before heading to Queensland. He has won 14 races and just under $100,000 in stakes.
Cavallaro said the colt’s family traced back to the outstanding mare of the early 1980’s, Tuapeka Star, which was trained by Graeme Morgan.
“You never like to look too far ahead with horses, but at the moment, I’m happy with the way he is going,” Cavallaro said.
The Penfield training partnership of Jill Neilson and Katie Wilson had a double on Saturday winning with trotter Savvy Kyvalley and the sensationally backed Heston Blue Streak, both driven by Wayne Hill.
In each victory, Hill was able to find the front at gate release and rate the horses perfectly.
Savvy Kyvalley has won five of his 13 starts since being purchased from Victoria by Wilson’s mother Lee Ann Pangrazio, and wife Naomi.
“He has more than repaid his purchase price,” Jill Neilson said.
Savvy Kyvalley ($3.30) won the Paceway Restaurant @ Globe Derby Trotters Mobile (2230m) by three metres from Lady In The Sky ($12) with Aldebaran Stiles ($3 fav), 5-1/2 metres away third.
Heston Blue Streak landed a massive plunge in the Mitavite Studgro Pace (1800m).
The five-year-old was backed from $3 into $1.70 favourite and his supporters never had any cause for concern as he raced away to win by 10-1/2 metres from Jamaican Rock ($1.80 out to $3) with Barney Fella ($41), a head away third.
Neilson said the gelding was nearly headed out the stable door last year, but it was decided to give him a spell and one more preparation.
Since returning, Heston Blue Streak has won five of 13 starts with a number of placings.
“I have no idea why his form has picked up,” Neilson said.
“Nothing has changed with his training, but since a break, he has just become a proper racehorse.”
Part-owner and former trainer Alan Cronin was at the York harness meeting in Yorkshire, England and between races watched on his phone as his three-year-old Hezrockinroyalty took out the Hygain Digest & Protect Pace (1800m).
Now trained by Ryan Hryhorec, Hezrockinroyalty has won three races in a row and developing into a quality young pacer.
Talented squaregaiter Skybreeze made a successful return to racing for the Johnson family in the Globe Bar & Gaming Trotters Handicap (2230m).
Bred and owned by Pat Johnson, trained by her son Lane, and driven by grandson Corey, Skybreeze ($11) finished powerfully from midfield to win by 2-1/2 metres from Cyclone S Adams ($18) with Uncle Louis ($8), 4-1/2 metres away third.
The seven-year-old was having just his 14th start and now has eight wins, a second and a third.
Star reinswoman Samantha Pascoe completed an unusual running double when her pacer Joonior Brown led throughout in the Ladbrokes Racing Club Pace (1800m).
On Friday night, Pascoe drove at Launceston in Tasmania and her final drive, Im Themightylucy, trained in Gawler by Aaron Bain, unleashed a powerful sprint to win the Stacey Lear Photography Pace (2200m).
She flew home on Saturday and Joonior Brown was her first drive at Globe Derby Park.
It was the seven-year-old’s first win since July 29 last year, but Pascoe said that does not indicate why.
“I brought him back late last year but after a few runs it was obvious he had not come up, so we gave him another break,” she said.
“This time in he has been a lot better and hasn’t been too far away, so tonight’s win was a proper reward.”
Joonior Brown ($5 into $2.60 fav) led throughout to win by 5-1/2 metres from dead-heaters Whata Optimist ($7) and Per Ardua Ad Astra ($4.60).
Naracoorte trainer Greg Scholefield was back at Globe Derby collecting a win with Mikicool in the Bargain Steel Centre Pace (2230m) while one of his former team, Hanging Fire won his fifth consecutive race for new trainer Mario Borg.
