HRA have previously advised that Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEv) had recently been found in piggeries on the eastern seaboard. With the virus now spilled over into humans, horse owners need to be alert and follow the advice in the attached Fact Sheet provided by the Federal Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment.

Japanese Encephalitis is a nationally notifiable disease which means it must be reported to a veterinarian or biosecurity authority.  To report, call the national Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888. This number will put you in contact with the biosecurity authority in your state or territory.
