Ballarat’s harness racing facility, Bray Raceway, is to receive a major upgrade following the announcement of Victorian Coalition Government funding today.
The announcement comes less than 10 days out from the highly anticipated Group 1 Ballarat Pacing Cup on Friday January 25 and on the same day as centenary anniversary celebrations of the Ballarat and District Trotting Club (BDTC).
Minister for Racing Dr Denis Napthine announced total funding of $621,366 for the major project which will improve both the safety and competitiveness of racing on the circuit.
“This major upgrade at Bray Raceway will turn it into a world class track befitting of Ballarat’s significant status in Australasian harness racing,” Dr Napthine said.
“The project will include improving the camber around the turns, a total resurface of the track, enhanced track lighting as well as an upgrading of perimeter fencing and signage.
“The lack of camber has made it difficult for horses to challenge around the tight turns and also increases the risk of leg injuries to competing horses. These improvements will vastly increase the safety for horses as they strive for victory at Bray Raceway.
Chief Executive of the Ballarat and District Trotting Club Paul Rowse welcomed the funding announcement.
“Ballarat has consistently attracted high-quality race fields due to its race track, along with the club’s commitment to an unparalleled level of prizemoney,” Mr Rowse said.
“An important component of Ballarat’s success has been the spacious 1,000 metre racetrack however the current track is no longer seen as meeting the industry standard.
“The club is extremely appreciative that the Coalition Government has seen fit to help fund the upgrade of the track which now ensures the Ballarat Club’s future and guarantees continued growth in all areas of turnover,” Mr Rowse said.
Harness Racing Victoria Chief Executive Officer John Anderson said the Coalition Government’s contributions to upgrading racing infrastructure was greatly appreciated as was the efforts of the BDTC.
“It is 20 years since the Ballarat track was upgraded. Since that time, 13 tracks around Victoria have been constructed or upgraded to the preferred standard of 1,000 metres,” Mr Anderson said.
“As one of Victoria’s premier clubs it is timely that an investment is made in the Ballarat track to ensure it keeps pace with the latest technology in track design and safety.”
The Coalition Government is providing $310,683 for the project with Harness Racing Victoria and the Ballarat & District Trotting Club jointly contributing $310,683.
