I love Harness Racing. Together with my wife and family we own, operate and train Harness Racing horses at our own Training Complex at Redcliffe Queensland near to the Redcliffe Paceway. I, for one, know the joys of winning, together with the grief of losing.
"Why would I decide to write a story on a Harness Racing personality?" You may ask. One evening, about three years ago, I was attending an Albion Park Paceway meeting. As I looked around the birdcage an idea suddenly came into my mind, "How facilitating it would be to write a story on one of the characters in Harness Racing?" I approached ‘Hollywood’ John McMullen asking him if I could write his life story. At the time I hardly knew ‘Hollywood’ John McMullen or how he came by the name of ‘Hollywood’.
John wasn’t very responsive to the idea, as you could understand. Anyway, last year John contacted me to say he was ready.
Up until writing this book, I’d written and published six other books – Helping parents with improving communication with their teenage children – Pacemaker Book – Depression Book, this was my first venture of ‘telling a person’s story’. It was John’s first book about his life story.
You may say we were both ‘blind leading the blind’.
Around the same time I started writing John’s book, David Fowler, Queensland’s Number 1, Harness Racing Caller interviewed John on Briz 31 – Harness Racing Show about his life in Harness Racing unaware I was about to write John’s book.
When David was told of my impending book he contacted me to appear on his show to tell the audience about John’s book. So pleased was David to hear about me writing a book on his friend ‘Hollywood’ John McMullen, he agreed to write the foreword.

So intense was John’s determination to learn all he could about harness racing, he lived in a horse stall next to the male toilets at Ipswich Showgrounds. As he has said, ‘These were the grass roots of harness racing’.
One would think, it could have been just a passing phase of youth to live in a horse stall. The bug of harness racing had bitten John. The bug of harness racing has bitten all of us at one time, which explains why we continue on in a sport, we love and enjoy.
John’s journey in harness racing lead him to become a leading owner/trainer/driver at Albion Park Paceway, Brisbane. He regularly travelled to America competing at the highest level against the best drivers in the world.
