Western Australia's Stephen Reed has won the Australasian Young Drivers' Championship

He had to settle for second place in the final heat of the 2008 Christian Cullen Australasian Young Drivers’ Championship, but Stephen Reed has still done enough to take out the prestigious series.

The 12 points the Western Australian picked up for beating home all bar New Zealand representative Dexter Dunn and Yucatchim carried him past defending champion James Austin and on to victory.

Reed, 24, who entered Saturday night's final meeting in second place just two points astern Austin, finished the seven-race series with 65 points to his name.

That was three more than Austin, who only landed seven points after finishing in fourth place aboard Albert Jaccka in the final event.

Dunn’s victory in the final event of the series lifted him to third position on the overall standings with 54 points. Matthew White, from New Zealand’s North Island, finished fourth on 51 points, while hometown hope Nathan Jack finished fifth on 49 points after running third in the final race.

Reed’s win gives him bragging rights over older brother Mark, who finished runner-up in the AYDC the last time it was in Melbourne (2000).
