2004 Winner - TREVOR MUNDAY (NSW)


Trevor Munday, representing New South Wales, held on to win the Australasian Young Drivers Championship when the series ended at Gloucester Park on Friday night during the support program for the Inter Dominion Championship. 

Munday’s consistent efforts early in the series set up an unassailable lead going into the final night, however only two points separated Scott Phelan (NZ NI) and him going into the exciting last heat.

Scott Phelan (NZ NI) finished behind Trevor in the last race and was just five points behind on the final tally. Luke McCarthy (Qld) filled third place. 
 

  

 

Most of the 10 drivers were sons (daughter) of trainers, thus giving them an early induction into the driving ranks, along with opportunities. 

Gareth Rattray, the defending champion, is a twin son of champion Tasmanian horseman Barrie Rattray, who has represented Australia at a World Driving Championship. The young man, who now does most of his driving in Victoria, finished fourth behind Munday. 

Victoria’s Amy Tubbs was the sole female. After a tentative start to the series, she finished on well on the final night to finish equal on 41 points with Perth’s Gary Hall Jnr who was only inched out of winning the Inter Dominion Grand Final driving The Falcon Strike NZ on the same night. 

Final Points: Trevor Munday (NSW) 77, Scott Phelan (NZ North Island) 72, Luke McCarthy (Qld) 53, Gareth Rattray (defending) 48, Amy Tubbs (Vic) and Gary Hall Jnr (WA) 41, Greg Sugars (SA) 40, Stephen McNally (NZ South Island) 37, Scott Lethaby (NZ) 36 and Aleck Dornauf (Tas) 21.
